Students will learn the elements of a scary story and will write chills and thrills of their own! This 4-week class includes a weekly 1-hour Zoom call, Google Classroom materials, & personal feedback.

Class Description: Scary Stories Writing Class for Kids
🎃 Lesson 1: The Haunted Season Has Arrived
Students will learn the skeleton of a scary story, including a suspenseful atmosphere, fear of the unknown, and vulnerable characters. We will analyze text from the award-winning book, Scary Stories for Young Foxes and practice making inferences.
👻 Lesson 2: Creepy Crawlies, Wicked Witches, Mad Monsters & More
Learn powerful, boo-filled writing techniques such as similes, sound words (onomatopoeia), alliteration and more! Creak! Scratch! Boo! Yup, we gotcha! Analyze examples from award-winning books and create scary scenes of your own.
🌜 Lesson 3: On Halloween Night
Nighttime. Grime. Slime. It’s time to rhyme on Halloween Night. Read classic Halloween picture books and write a rhyming scene filled with chills and thrills. Sketch out your mischievous main character.
🥀 Lesson 4: The Secret Graveyard Society
Students read aloud grade-level reader’s theater scripts, including the humorous The Secret Graveyard Society. Discuss and implement the concept of “story beats,” balancing drama and suspense with humor.
