This 4-week poetry class includes a weekly 1-hour Zoom call, Google Classroom materials, & personal feedback.

Class Description: Poetry Writing Class

🤣 Lesson 1: Spotlight on: Shel Silverstein and Humor
Explore the hilarious world of Shel Silverstein with beloved poems from Where the Sidewalk Ends and Light in the Attic. Discuss tips for writing humor, and have fun writing your own LOL🤣 poems.

✍️ Lesson 2: Spotlight on: Amanda Gorman and Strength
Words are powerful. Read and listen to change-making poetry by Amanda Gorman, the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history and first-ever National Youth Poet Laureate. Students write their own powerful free verse poem(s).

📖 Lesson 3: Spotlight on: “The Greats” and Voice
Of course, there are too many GREAT POETS to count! We will read and discuss a variety of poems from Maya Angelou, Rumi, Edgar Allen Poe, William Carlos Williams, and many more. Each voice is unique… students develop and share their unique voice through poetry.

🤔 Lesson 4: Spotlight on: More “Greats” and Style
Poetry takes many forms, including free verse, cinquain, haiku, sonnets and more. We will dive into poems that reflect each style. Students will experiment with each type of poem.


I have 24 years of writing and editing experience, including three years as a writing instructor. I love helping kids learn new skills while having fun along the way!
