Learn and write about history through award-winning literature. Craft your own historical fiction story in this 4-week class. Includes weekly 1-hour Zoom call, engaging materials hosted on Google Classroom, and personal feedback. Read a historical fiction novel before attending!
*Important: Read at least one historical fiction book before starting class! (Each week, we will use sample text from four different novels as described below. You don’t have to read these books in order to fully participate, but they are amazing!)
🔥 Lesson 1: Spotlight on: I Survived series
Identify elements of historical fiction using the I Survived series. Identify similes & metaphors in sample text, and practice your own figurative writing. Select a time period and story topic for your historical fiction story.
🏠 Lesson 2: Spotlight on: Other Words for Home
Create main and supporting characters. Discuss characters in mentor texts, including Other Words for Home. Analyze the author’s unique use of line breaks to add drama to the story and explore how she teaches life lessons through Arabic proverbs.
🌹 Lesson 3: Spotlight on: Esperanza Rising
Develop an outline for your historical fiction story using graphic organizers and mentor texts, including Esperanza Rising. Explore how the author uses Spanish to highlight important characters, events, and culture.
⚔️ Lesson 4: Spotlight on: Heart of a Samurai
Share your works in progress. Using the mentor text Heart of a Samurai as an example, we will discuss “the rule of 3” writing technique and review similes and metaphors. We will also identify how the author includes Japanese and sailing-related vocabulary to emphasize the setting and important concepts.
